KeriCure Medical and the Coalition for National Trauma Research Begin First Clinical Trial on Cutting Edge Spray-on Wound Dressing for Burns

Tampa, FL – KeriCure Medical, a leader in advanced biotechnology solutions, proudly announces their first clinical trial began this month as a two study site trial, enrolling both military and civilian patients. The trial, a head to head comparison of KeriCure Medical’s Field Shield Wound Dressing against a standard of care silver dressing for military medic use in burn management, officially kicked off January 2025 at the US Army Institute for Surgical Research Burn Center (USAISR, PI Dr. Leopoldo Cancio) and Valleywise Health Burn Center (Valleywise Health, PI Dr. Kevin Foster).

To be managed by the Coalition for National Trauma Research (CNTR), a nonprofit research coordinating center, the two-year trial will enroll 40 patients suffering 5-30% total body surface area (TBSA) burn wounds. The study will focus on healing outcomes for the patients, including healing time, complications, pain management, and surgical interventions required for healing.

USAISR’s Burn Center, located in San Antonio, TX on Ft. Sam Houston Joint Base is the Army’s only burn center and only one of two burn centers in the country that treats military personnel injured in the field. USAISR cares for roughly 500 burn admissions annually, seeing both military and civilian burn patients in their state of the art facility.

Valleywise Health Burn Center, located in Phoenix, AZ, is the premier burn center in the Southwest, with a brand new facility that has a 45 bed capacity. Valleywise cares for more than 1,200 inpatients, 3,000 emergency room patients, and 6,000 outpatients with burn injuries a year, who come from Arizona, California, New Mexico and Northern Mexico, and most recently Hawaii. Valleywise is an ideal partner for this prolonged field care focused clinical trial as they serve as a training ground for the U.S. military, providing specialty instruction to thousands of military personnel.

KeriCure Medical’s Field Shield Wound Dressing is a first-of-its-kind multi-use spray-on wound dressing designed for advanced wound management for both civilian applications and military requirements for prolonged field care and Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC). “This dressing constitutes a unique combination of silver hydrosol antimicrobial and lidocaine for pain relief, integrated into KeriCure’s patented nanopolymer technology,” explained Dr. Kerriann Greenhalgh, Founder, CEO, and CSO of KeriCure Medical. “This unique combination of biotechnology works in  synergy to create an optimal healing environment, addressing the urgent needs of antimicrobial and pain management for burns that is not achieved by any other wound dressing currently on the market.” Dr. Greenhalgh said she believes the trial will support the early in vivo findings for Field Shield Would Dressing that showed better healing with fewer complications for large size burn wounds.
